A Little History of Camping Kaul
The site of Camping Kaul, named for the local term “Kaul” (Luxembourgish for “grove”), was first intended as a place for healing. At the turn of the 19th century, plans were set in motion to build a sanatorium here, a peaceful retreat where people could come to find inner balance and well-being. However, the onset of World War I halted the project. In the 1930s, ideas emerged to create an orphanage in the Kaul, but this, too, went unfulfilled.
Yet the vision of Kaul as a place of well-being endured. In the 1960s, a campsite and swimming pool were established, continuing the original spirit of care and healing. Later, in 2006, Luxembourgish artist Edmée Marth transformed the remains of the unfinished sanatorium into an artwork titled “Spiritual Journey – Path to Healing and Peace.” These ruins, a testament to the area’s history, can still be found in the forest near the campsite.
In January 2021, COOPERATIONS S.C. assumed stewardship of the site and set out to fulfill Kaul’s original purpose.
Through the Camping Kaul project, we seek to create a space that resonates with the spirit of healing and community that has long been part of this special place.
With this rich history in mind, we look forward to sharing a restful and inspiring holiday with you at Camping Kaul.
